Why Memorize Scripture?
We value Scripture because it is profitable for teaching, reproving, correcting, and training in righteousness so that we are equipped for every good work (2 Timothy 3:16), but it is not enough to just know about Scripture. To live righteously, we must have Scripture memorized, hidden in our hearts, in order to keep us from sin in the moment of temptation. This is the example Christ set for us when he countered temptation with Scripture from His own memory. Therefore, we will help our children by coming alongside them in Scripture memorization.

How Do We Memorize Scripture?
We, along with the children's ministries at Heritage, follow the Fighter Verse schedule. During our weekly opening assembly we introduce the verse to our community along with some context and possible memory strategies. We highly recommend that families incorporate these memory verses in their homes with their children so that the whole family may grow spiritually together. Some strategies our families use to help memorize Scripture include:
Sing the Scripture: Putting Scripture to song helps it stick in minds. This is especially effective for auditory learners. The fighter verse app often has songs for each memory verse. Additional resources can be found including Sing the KJV.
Hand Motions: Using your whole body to remember phrases helps remember what comes next. This is especially effective with younger and kinesthetic learners
Copy work: Writing out the Scriptures helps retain the exact wording and is an excellent time to practice penmanship and/or cursive. This is especially effective for vidual learners.
Repetition: Repeating after a leader helps with initial familiarity with the words.
Review: Reviewing the verse and previous verses with each other helps ensure that verses remain memorized.
